Galen traces its origins to 1989, when Humana founded Galen Health Institutes in Louisville, Kentucky, to teach a one-year practical-nursing course in three cities: Louisville, San Antonio and St. Petersburg, Florida. Approval in 2005 to grant the associate degree that leads to registered-nurse licensure brought the Galen College of Nursing name, and in 2020 HCA Healthcare bought a controlling stake. HCA Houston Healthcare and Galen announced the Houston campus on October 25, 2022; located on Equity Drive in northwest Houston, it began a three-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing on January 9, 2023, added vocational nursing and an LPN/LVN-to-ADN bridge later that year, and shares its building with an HCA Healthcare Center for Clinical Advancement simulation center.
