History
The College of Biblical Studies grew out of Rev. Ernest L. Mays's plan for a school that would prepare Christian leaders from Houston's inner-city and minority communities. Incorporated in 1976 as Houston Bible & Vocational Institute, it soon set aside the vocational track to concentrate on Bible and theology, and as Houston Bible Institute it began teaching in fall 1979, meeting at Christian radio station KHCB-FM under its first executive director, Rev. Rodney L. Cooper. The school bought a campus of its own near Hillcroft Avenue and the Southwest Freeway in 1994, and during the 1990s it won certification as a college from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and took the name College of Biblical Studies–Houston. National accreditation through what is now the Association for Biblical Higher Education came in 1999, followed in 2013 by accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award degrees up to the bachelor's level. A 2019 merger with Crossroads Bible College of Indianapolis gave the college its sites in Indiana.
