San Jacinto College

San Jacinto College takes its name from the nearby San Jacinto battleground, and it dates to a May 1960 election in which residents of five Ship Channel school districts, Channelview, Deer Park, Galena Park, La Porte and Pasadena, voted to form the East Harris County Union Junior College and to tax themselves to support it. The board adopted the San Jacinto Junior College District name in February 1961, and 876 students started classes that September in converted store buildings in downtown Pasadena while a permanent 143-acre Central Campus was built nearby. By 1965 it was the second-largest junior college in Texas, and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools first accredited it in 1966. After years of extension classes in local high schools, the district opened a North Campus on Uvalde Road in 1975 and a South Campus on Beamer Road in 1979. Voters approved major bond packages in 1999 and 2008 for new learning, fine-arts, science and health buildings; Hurricane Ike damaged all three campuses in 2008, yet classes resumed in less than three weeks. The college later added a Maritime Campus at the Port of Houston in La Porte in 2016 and a Generation Park campus in northeast Houston in 2020, and its programs remain closely tied to the petrochemical, maritime and health-care employers of east Harris County.
