UT MD Anderson Cancer Center

MD Anderson dates to 1941, when the Texas Legislature set aside $500,000 for a state cancer hospital and research center under the University of Texas. The M.D. Anderson Foundation, created by Houston cotton merchant Monroe Dunaway Anderson, supplied matching money, a permanent site and temporary quarters, so the institution took his name. Its first patients were treated in remodeled buildings on the Oaks, the former James A. Baker estate near downtown Houston, while Ernst W. Bertner served as acting director; surgeon R. Lee Clark became the first full-time director in 1946 and led the center for 32 years. Construction of a permanent hospital in the new Texas Medical Center began in 1950, and the 310-bed building, clad in distinctive pink Georgia marble, received its first patients in early 1954 and was formally dedicated that October, the same year the center put into service what is credited as the world's first clinical cobalt-60 radiation unit. Under the National Cancer Act of 1971 it became one of the country's first three comprehensive cancer centers, and it adopted the name University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in 1988. Besides patient care and research, MD Anderson grants bachelor's and master's degrees through its School of Health Professions and co-runs a biomedical graduate school with UTHealth Houston. U.S. News & World Report has ranked it the nation's top hospital for cancer care in every edition from 2014 through 2024–25.
