UTHealth Houston

UTHealth Houston, formally The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, was created by the UT System Board of Regents in 1972 to bring the system's Houston-based health schools under one administration in the Texas Medical Center. Its oldest piece is the dental school, founded on February 11, 1905, as the private Texas Dental College by a group of Houston businessmen, physicians and dentists; it became part of the University of Texas in 1943 and is regarded as the oldest state dental school in Texas. The Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences followed in 1963, run jointly with MD Anderson Cancer Center, along with the School of Public Health in 1967 and a new medical school in 1970. The School of Nursing opened in 1972, the year the health science center itself was formed, and a school of allied health sciences, later reborn as the school of biomedical informatics, began in 1973. Over the following decades the institution added the Harris County Psychiatric Center and built affiliations with hospitals such as Hermann and Lyndon B. Johnson General, and by 2000 its clinics were treating more than a million patients a year. Several of its schools now carry donor names, including McGovern Medical School, Cizik School of Nursing and the McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics, and in 2022 it added a behavioral sciences campus and school. Today UTHealth Houston enrolls more than 5,000 students across its schools of medicine, dentistry, nursing, public health, biomedical sciences, informatics and behavioral health.
