History
The Starr Family Home State Historic Site preserves a 3.1-acre complex in downtown Marshall that traces four generations of one of Texas's most influential early political families. The patriarch, James Harper Starr, served the Republic of Texas as Secretary of the Treasury and later as commissioner of the General Land Office. The main house, known as Maplecroft, was built for James Franklin Starr in 1870 by New Orleans shipwrights in the Greek Revival style and remained in the family until it opened to the public in 1986. Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, the site was transferred from Texas Parks and Wildlife to the Texas Historical Commission in 2008.
