History

Walter Paye Lane (1817-1892) was an Irish-born veteran of the Texas Revolution and the Mexican-American War who settled in Marshall in 1858. During the Civil War he rose to brigadier general in the Confederate Army, and afterward he helped found the Texas Veterans Association. He is buried in Marshall.
