History

The Mission Historical Museum opened in 2002 in the 1939 John Shary Building, a Texas Historical Landmark, and offers free admission. It tells the story of Mission and western Hidalgo County, including the citrus industry launched when developer John H. Shary made the area home of the Texas sweet grapefruit, celebrated since 1932 with the Texas Citrus Fiesta. Exhibits also honor local notables such as Dallas Cowboys coach and Mission native Tom Landry.
