History

La Piedad Cemetery is the oldest burial ground in McAllen, in use since at least 1895; its oldest marked grave is that of Gertrudis Cavazos, who died that year. The Asociacion del Cementerio La Piedad was founded in 1913 and incorporated in 1930 to maintain the roughly twelve-acre site, which holds more than 7,000 graves adorned with religious, Masonic, and Woodmen of the World markers. The Texas Historical Commission marked it in 2005.
