History

The M & J Nelson Building at 300-308 South Main Street in McAllen is a three-story reinforced-concrete commercial building erected between 1948 and 1950 for the J.C. Penney Company in the Streamlined Moderne style, with horizontal red-and-buff brick banding and cast-stone trim. It was among the first buildings in McAllen to have an elevator and air conditioning. It was named a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 2007 and listed on the National Register in 2008.
