History
Cine El Rey at 311 South 17th Street in McAllen opened in 1947 as a Spanish-language movie theater serving the city's growing Mexican and Mexican-American community, among the first U.S. theaters devoted to Mexican cinema. Built in the Art Moderne style with a distinctive neon projecting marquee, it later became a performing arts and events venue. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.
