History

El Desierto Cemetery lies on the historic El Desierto Ranch, named in 1888 by Rafael Vela, a member of the pioneering Vela family who settled Hidalgo County's Laguna Seca area beginning in 1857. Rafael Vela and his widow are entombed in an above-ground boveda crypt at the cemetery. Some graves were later moved to the Laguna Seca Cemetery, which opened in 1913.
