History

Humboldt Cemetery, about nine miles northeast of Greenville in Hunt County, grew from a community settled by families who arrived from Tennessee in 1866; the first burial was likely infant Katharine Rankin in 1868, and the Dinsmore family heirs deeded the land as a burial ground in 1890. The four-acre cemetery includes the graves of six Civil War veterans and 38 infants buried before 1932, reflecting the hardships of pioneer life, and received a Texas Historical Marker in 2000.
