History

The Seale Cemetery is tied to the family of Joshua Seale, whose plantation lay west of Jasper in the Indian Creek and Bevilport area. With Joshua Seale's help, Richard 'Dick' Seale, born enslaved about 1797 in Virginia, founded what is remembered as one of the oldest African American churches in Texas in 1850; he died in 1875 and was buried in the Seale family cemetery, which holds both white settlers and formerly enslaved members of the community.
