History
The John Jay French Museum preserves an 1845 Greek Revival house built by tanner and merchant John Jay French, considered the oldest restored home in Beaumont and among the area's first two-story, milled-lumber, painted dwellings. It is furnished to depict the life of a prosperous Texas pioneer family between 1845 and 1865. Outbuildings on the grounds include a blacksmith shop, tannery, privy, and smokehouse, and the site is operated by the Beaumont Heritage Society.
