History

Johnson County was organized in 1854, and after seats at Wardville and Buchanan the government moved in 1867 to the settlement that became Cleburne. The present courthouse, opened in November 1913, was built for about $194,000 to replace an 1883 Second Empire courthouse that burned in 1912. Designed by Lang and Witchell (with architect Charles E. Barglebaugh) in a Beaux Arts plan with Prairie and Sullivanesque detailing, it features a clock tower and a stained-glass interior dome, and was restored and rededicated in 2007.
