History

The Butler Family Cemetery sits on the original homestead of pioneer trail driver William Green Butler and his wife Adeline Burris Butler, who reached Texas before the Civil War and built ranching interests spanning five South Texas counties, with nearly 75,000 acres and 10,000 cattle in Karnes County alone. The first burial was that of their twenty-year-old son Emmett, killed in a Helena gunfight in December 1884, an event legend links to Helena's decline. Bill and Adeline Butler are buried side by side among some forty graves in the trust-maintained plot.
