History
Erected in 1918 on land owned by former San Antonio mayor pro tem Albert Steves, the Hygieostatic Bat Roost is a 30-foot shingled pyramidal tower designed by San Antonio health officer Dr. Charles A. R. Campbell to attract bats as a natural means of controlling malaria-carrying mosquitoes. Steves coined the name from the Greek words for health and standing. Of sixteen such roosts built across the United States, the Comfort tower is the only survivor. It was named a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1981 and added to the National Register in 1983.
