History

St. Joseph's Cemetery lies behind St. Joseph Catholic Church at Rhineland in Knox County, a German Catholic colony founded in the 1890s. In 1894-95 Father Joseph Reisdorff arranged with land investor J.C. League to set aside some 12,000 acres to be sold only to German Catholic settlers, and the parish they established has anchored the community ever since. The cemetery immediately behind the church holds roughly 600 graves.
