History

Gilliland Cemetery served the ranching community of Gilliland in northern Knox County, first settled around 1890 by Norwegian families from Bosque County at a place initially called Coyote. The Woodmen of the World bought the cemetery land from Bud Jones before 1914, offering burial to anyone in the area for a small recording fee, and the first person interred was infant Clarice Lively in 1915. A cemetery association later added a well, pump house, and a memorial honoring World War I and II veterans.
