History

Friendship Cemetery in Lamar County traces to a burial ground begun about 1830 near a settlement of northern-born families sometimes called 'Yankee Town'; when a later landowner forbade further burials, the site was moved. In October 1861 Nolan Stewart, who owned land near Rock Creek, buried a child at the present location and deeded an acre for the cemetery, and in 1866 neighbor Madison Walsh donated adjoining ground for a school and Sunday school. The graveyard lies south of Biardstown and holds many old, now largely unreadable stones.
