History

Hallettsville grew from a settlement begun in 1833, when John Hallett built a cabin near the Lavaca River on land granted through Stephen F. Austin's colony. The town was named for his widow, Margaret Hallett, who donated land when the community became county seat. After a hard-fought contest with rival Petersburg, Hallettsville was confirmed as seat of Lavaca County in 1852.
