History
John Wilkins Whitfield (1818-1879) was a Tennessee-born legislator, federal Indian agent, and congressional delegate from Kansas Territory before settling in Lavaca County. In 1861 he raised a company of Confederate cavalry from the county known as 'Whitfield's Rifles,' rose to brigadier general in 1863, and was severely wounded at the Battle of Iuka. He also served as a delegate to two Texas constitutional conventions and died near Hallettsville in 1879.
