History

Bluebonnet Hill Memory Garden is the African American cemetery of Shiner, tracing its roots to 1898 when trustees Nathan Austin, J. H. Hannah, Paul Mitchell, and William O'Neal of the Shiner Colored Cemetery Association bought a plot for the town's Black citizens. Because the original site flooded and fell into disrepair, in 1947 the Shiner Cemetery Society moved the burials and gravestones about two miles south to the present Blue Bonnet Hill site. The relocated cemetery holds about three hundred markers, the oldest for Thomas Mitchell, who died November 10, 1899.
