History

Harless Cemetery lies south of Hallettsville near the community of Hope, reached by way of County Roads 444 and 447. When surveyed in 1991 it held about 147 markers, though many were blank funeral-home plates and a number of graves near the creek are believed lost. Its oldest recorded burial is that of Hiram Harless in 1859; in an oft-told episode from October 1899, the flooding Lavaca River cut off access to the cemetery during a burial.
