History

This cemetery serves Argenta, a Live Oak County community settled about 1904 when J. B. Bonner and other families from northern Arkansas bought land off the old Skidmore Ranch; first called Ego, it was renamed Argenta after a post office opened in 1908. A Church of Christ congregation—said to be among the oldest in Texas—has met continuously since 1906, when men of the community hauled lumber from Skidmore to build its first church. The community's single burial ground, unnamed on its deed but registered with the state, lies near the Argenta Church of Christ northeast of Mathis.
