History
St. George Cemetery is the parish burial ground of St. George Catholic Church in George West, established after Father William H. Oberste proposed a parish cemetery in 1929 and Ignatz Chlebek and his wife donated the land. Before it opened, area Catholics—descendants of Irish, Polish, and German immigrants—buried their dead at Gussettville's St. Joseph's or in family plots, traveling to Gussettville for Mass as the county's only Catholic church. Bernard Katzfey was the first person interred in the new cemetery, which is still maintained by its own council.
