History

Lubbock Lake Landmark is an archaeological site and natural history preserve on the northern edge of Lubbock that holds evidence of nearly 12,000 years of human occupation on the Llano Estacado—the only site in North America to preserve so complete a record in one place. Its significance emerged in 1936 when the city dredged the old meander of Yellowhouse Draw for water and unearthed artifacts, with the first scientific excavations following in 1939 by the West Texas Museum. Part of the Museum of Texas Tech University, it is a National Historic Landmark and a state archeological landmark.
