History
The American Wind Power Center—now also known as the American Windmill Museum—is a 28-acre museum east of downtown Lubbock exhibiting more than 160 American-style windmills, the largest such collection in the world. It was established in 1993 by Texas Tech faculty member Billie Wolfe and Coy Harris, building on Wolfe's decades of documenting and rescuing windmills and on the acquisition of Don Hundley's 48-windmill Nebraska collection. A 33,000-square-foot addition opened in 2016 with a large-scale model-train display, and a Vestas wind turbine powers the facility.
