History

The Silent Wings Museum in Lubbock preserves the history of the World War II military glider program. It began in 1984 as a project of the Military Glider Pilots Association and, after Lubbock offered a site at the former South Plains Army Air Field where many glider pilots trained, opened its current museum in October 2001. Its centerpiece is a fully restored CG-4A combat glider—one of only a handful surviving of the nearly 14,000 built—reconstructed from parts gathered across the country.
