History

Jefferson's Old United States Post Office and Courts Building was constructed between 1888 and 1890 in a Romanesque Revival style with Greek Revival details. It housed the U.S. post office on the first floor and the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas on the second, serving in that role into the 1960s. The Jefferson Historical Society purchased it in 1965 for use as a museum, and it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1969.
