The Freeman Plantation house, west of Jefferson in Marion County, was completed about 1850 for merchant and cotton planter Williamson M. Freeman, who had brought his family from Georgia by steamboat. Built in the Greek Revival raised-cottage style transplanted from Louisiana, it reflected Freeman's prosperity from Jefferson's waterfront warehouses and a cotton- and sugar-based plantation. It was designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1965 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1969.
