History
Marion County was carved from the southern part of Cass County by an act of the legislature on February 8, 1860 and named for Revolutionary War hero Francis Marion, the "Swamp Fox." Jefferson, established in the early 1840s and made the county seat in 1860, thrived as a river port: the Red River Raft logjam kept Big Cypress Bayou navigable, giving the town a booming steamboat trade with New Orleans.
