History

The Planters Bank building in Jefferson dates to about 1852, when the town was a bustling riverport at the head of navigation on Big Cypress Bayou. In its heyday the structure served as the riverfront warehouse of a mercantile firm with branches in St. Louis and New Orleans before its association with banking. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and a state marker was placed in 1965.
