History

This churchyard served the African American community of Mt. Carmel, about ten miles northeast of Jefferson and three miles northwest of Smithland in Marion County. First known as Williams Cemetery, it took the Mt. Carmel name after a Methodist church was built beside it in 1883; the community's school taught forty-five pupils by 1899, and an open chapel erected on the grounds in 1920 still stands.
