History

New Pontotoc Cemetery was established about 1887 to replace the older Pontotoc burial ground, which was abandoned after a typhoid epidemic raised fears it was contaminating the water table. Located about a mile west of Pontotoc on land donated by a Mr. Stone, it holds more than 500 graves, including veterans from the Civil War through Vietnam and many pioneer families of the community.
