History

Behrens Cemetery marks the site of a small German settlement about four miles northeast of Mason, named for Henry Julius Behrens, one of the first German settlers to move there from Fredericksburg. Behrens arrived in January 1880, and he and his neighbors soon built a schoolhouse on his land, with the family cemetery established nearby. The rock Behrens house was reported still standing as late as 1976.
