History

The City by the Sea Museum, home of the Palacios Area Historical Association, occupies a two-story 1910 building that is one of the oldest downtown structures in Palacios. Incorporated in 1982, the association bought and restored the former mercantile in 1986. Exhibits span the region's Karankawa and French exploration history, including La Salle's ship La Belle found in Matagorda Bay in 1995, the Camp Hulen military training base, and the local shrimping industry.
