History
A 1936 marker north of Matagorda recalls Battle Island, where in 1826 a company of volunteers led by Capt. Aylett C. Buckner pursued and nearly destroyed a band of Karankawa Indians blamed for killing settler families on the lower Caney. The Texans trailed the group to an island near the mouth of the Colorado River, giving the site its name.
