History
The Caney Post Office in Matagorda County was established about 1838, when Robert H. Williams served as postmaster and members of Austin's colony were founding pioneer sugar plantations nearby. The community took its name from Caney Creek, an old bed of the Colorado River lined with dense canebrake. The post office closed in 1846, reopened in 1847, and finally closed in 1914; the State of Texas placed the marker in 1936.
