History

Hudgins Cemetery serves the historically African American community of Hudgins, which grew up in the Caney Creek bottomlands about eight miles east of Bay City around land bought in 1874 by Ino Hudgins, a Virginia-born freedman, at twenty-five dollars an acre. By the mid-20th century the Hudgins and nearby Pleasant Green cemeteries were among the settlement's last landmarks. The Texas Historical Commission designated it a Historic Texas Cemetery and placed a marker there in 2001.
