History

Lohn Cemetery grew from a community burial ground on the property of German immigrant Boi Albert Cornils, who settled the area in 1884 and in 1896 deeded five acres for a free public school beside the graveyard. Several unmarked graves may predate the earliest recorded burial, that of Heinrich Rudolph in 1883. A cemetery association formed in 1972 to maintain the grounds, which hold several hundred graves, including many veterans. The Texas Historical Commission placed a marker at the site in 2002, and it is a designated Historic Texas Cemetery.
