History

Chaffin Cemetery, about twenty miles northwest of Brady near the old Waldrip crossing of the Colorado River, is considered the oldest county-maintained cemetery in McCulloch County. The Chaffin family, who farmed and ranched along the river, gave the land, and Confederate captain Joseph Chaffin is buried there; his is the only marked Chaffin grave among many marked only with worn sandstone. In 1959 the community organized the Marion-Chaffin Cemetery Association to maintain the grounds.
