History
On the banks of the Medina River in Castroville, the Landmark Inn grew from a mid-19th-century Alsatian settlement. In 1849 Cesar and Hannah Monod built a residence, store, and stage stop here; the Vance family bought it in 1853, added a second story, and began renting rooms, while a riverfront dam and water-powered gristmill were built beginning in 1854. The building reopened as the Landmark Inn on July 4, 1942, was donated to the state in 1974, and opened to the public as a state historic site in 1981. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.
