Landmark Inn State Historic Site sits on the banks of the Medina River in Castroville, 'the Little Alsace of Texas.' In 1849 Cesar and Hannah Monod built the original residence, store, and stage stop; John and Rowena Vance bought it in 1853, added a second story, and began renting rooms to travelers. Later owners ran a gristmill and, in 1927, converted it to generate electricity; the property was renamed the Landmark Inn in 1942, donated to the state in 1974, opened as a historic site in 1981, and transferred to the Texas Historical Commission in 2008.
