Midland College got its start in September 1969, when the new Permian Junior College system opened a campus in Midland using local public-school facilities; by 1970–71 it had about 780 students. In 1972 local voters formed the independent Midland College District, which issued bonds of about $5.1 million to build a permanent campus; ground was broken in October 1973. The Pevehouse Administration Building and a science building opened in the spring of 1975, followed that fall by the Fasken Learning Resource Center and Scharbauer Student Center, and in 1978 by the Allison Fine Arts Building and the Al G. Langford Chaparral Center. The college later added health-science buildings, a chapel and residence halls on the main campus, and off-campus sites such as the Advanced Technology Center, an aviation-maintenance hangar at Midland International Airport and a regional training center in Fort Stockton. Today it serves a five-county area of the Permian Basin with academic transfer courses and energy, health and technical training programs.
