History
The Museum of the Southwest was incorporated in 1965 after the Junior League of Midland voted to establish an art and science museum, opening in 1966 with Governor John Connally cutting the ribbon. In July 1968 it moved into the Turner Mansion, a lavish 1936 home designed with Texas architect Anton F. Korn Jr. for oilman Fred Turner that was the first house in Midland with a swimming pool. The mansion was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988, and the museum campus now encompasses art galleries, a planetarium, and a children's museum.
