History
The Nita Stewart Haley Memorial Library and J. Evetts Haley History Center was founded in 1961 by historian and rancher J. Evetts Haley in memory of his first wife, with its building dedicated in 1976. Haley donated a private collection begun in the 1920s of more than 10,000 books along with saddles, bridles, and research files. Among its treasures are some 700 interviews Haley conducted with old trail drivers, XIT Ranch foremen, and survivors of New Mexico's Lincoln County War and the Billy the Kid story, all offered free to researchers.
