History

Oxsheer-Smith Cemetery, near Gause in Precinct 2, is named for William Wilson Oxsheer, a Tennessee-born pioneer who settled near Cameron in 1842, served as Milam County district clerk from 1846 to 1852, and represented the county in the Fourteenth Texas Legislature in 1873. Oxsheer died in 1905 and is buried here, on grounds that remain private property.
