History

The Liberty Hill Spring (or Liberty Hill–Springfield) Cemetery is a historically African American burial ground serving the Liberty Hill farm community northeast of Thorndale in Milam County. According to county records the local church deeded about an acre and a half for the cemetery, the first land having been bought from George Washington; the 'all-Black' ground held roughly 120 burials as of 2001. Among the community's notable figures was R. H. Rabb, a trustee of Allen Chapel AME Church in Taylor who attended the National Negro Farmers Congress of 1913.
